Fajtaismertető

Napjaink egyik legnépszerűbb fajtája, családi kutyája a yorki.

Gyorsan, hamar tanul, igényli is a napi foglalkozást, törődést. Fontos a következetes nevelés, a pozitív visszajelzés.

Breed Information

The Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most popular companion dog breeds today.

While the standard Yorkshire Terrier was already known in England in the 1880s as a working-class dog used for hunting small vermin and rats, the appearance of the first coloured Yorkshire Terriers is a much more recent development.

The standard Yorkshire Terrier was developed by crossing several terrier breeds. Its ancestry includes some terrier breeds that have since become extinct, as well as the Skye Terrier, which still exists today.

The first Biewer Terrier was born in Germany in 1984. It is likely that coloured puppies had appeared before but were considered faults and were not bred further. However, Mr. and Mrs. Biewer recognized the unique charm of the puppies born in their kennel and decided to develop them separately. They named the new breed "Biewer Yorkshire à la Pom Pon" and presented it at a dog show in 1988. The ACH recognized it as a separate breed, marking the beginning of its lasting popularity.

Today, these delightful little dogs can be found in a variety of beautiful colours. Collectively, they are often referred to as Colorful Terriers.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a small-sized dog with a bold and courageous personality. Alert and intelligent, this little dog has a remarkably big heart and is never afraid to face challenges much bigger than itself.

Yorkies are excellent watchdogs and often alert their owners to the arrival of visitors by barking. They form a very strong bond with their families and are happiest when they can spend as much time as possible with the people they love.

They are intelligent, eager to learn, and enjoy regular training and interaction. Consistent, positive reinforcement is essential during their upbringing. If they do not receive enough attention, exercise, and mental stimulation, they may become mischievous in an attempt to attract their owner's attention.

According to the breed standard, the ideal height is between 18 and 23 cm (7–9 inches), with a maximum weight of 3.1 kg (7 lbs). Contrary to popular belief, there are no officially recognized "teacup" or "extra mini" Yorkshire Terriers.

The Yorkshire Terrier's coat is long, straight, and silky. Pet dogs are usually kept in a shorter, more practical trim, while show dogs wear their coats long. Their coat is considered hypoallergenic, which may make them a suitable choice for some allergy sufferers.

Regular grooming is essential. The coat should be brushed frequently and bathed when necessary. The eyes should be cleaned daily, the ears checked and cleaned regularly, and the nails trimmed whenever they become too long.

As Yorkshire Terriers are prone to dental tartar and gum disease, good dental care is very important. They may also be affected by dry eye, hereditary cataracts, and certain joint conditions commonly seen in small breeds, such as elbow problems or luxating patella (dislocation of the kneecap).

As this is a very popular breed, it is important for prospective owners to choose their breeder carefully and responsibly.
